The 11.550 Zipbolt Angled UT Railbolt provides a professional, efficient, and visually clean solution for attaching handrails to newel posts at an angle. Purpose-built for the stair industry, it utilizes Zipbolt’s UT gear drive technology, allowing for precise tightening even in deep or angled positions using a standard 5 mm hex bit or Allen key.

This connector’s pivoting 8 mm shaft features a coach bolt thread that can be manually threaded into the newel post. Once the handrail is drilled and the angle cut is made, the railbolt connects seamlessly, creating a durable, concealed joint that requires no visible screws or nail holes. The pivoting mechanism allows flexibility for a wide range of angles, ensuring a perfect fit and strong hold every time.

Instructions

Steps

  1. Prepare the Newel Post

    • Mark and drill the hole according to the railbolt specification (Ø 6.5–7 mm for softwood or Ø 7 mm for hardwood).

    • Apply wax to the railbolt thread to ease installation.

    • Screw the pivoting shaft into the newel post until it reaches the pivot point.

  2. Prepare the Handrail

    • Mark the intersection point 3 mm (1/8 in) from the end.

    • Bore a 10 mm (3/8 in) hole to a depth of 24 mm (15/16 in) centered in the rail.

    • Do not cut the angle until all boring is complete.

  3. Insert Gear Housing

    • Place the UT drive housing into the pre-drilled hole in the handrail.

    • Use a cordless drill or screwdriver on a low torque setting to tighten.

  4. Attach and Tighten

    • Position the handrail onto the pivoting railbolt.

    • Insert the 5 mm hex bit into the UT housing and tighten to draw the joint securely together.

    • Plug and sand the access hole for a smooth, concealed finish.

  5. Final Adjustment

    • Verify alignment between handrail and newel post.

    • The connection should be firm, clean, and completely hidden.

Tips

  • Avoid using impact drivers to prevent damage to the gear housing.

  • Mark all drilling and angle cuts before assembly for the best fit.

  • The pivot joint allows flexible angle adjustment to accommodate site variations.
